In partnership with organizations such as The Innovation in Surgery Foundation and the Obesity Community Fund, we aim to address the growing obesity crisis in South Africa, where over 20 million people are affected, yet only 8,000 have had access to life-saving surgery. Our efforts focus on expanding access to care and enhancing specialist training through the African Surgery Academy, improving healthcare outcomes across the continent.
Our ongoing research projects reflect our commitment to advancing surgical knowledge and patient outcomes. These include the South African Collaborative Surgical Outcomes Study (SACSOS), which utilizes a digital health platform to track perioperative and patient-reported outcomes. We also lead initiatives in bariatric surgery, such as using AI-based neural networks to analyze the Bariatric Surgery Outcomes database and assessing the safety and efficacy of bariatric surgery in colorectal cancer patients. Additionally, our PROCUre Study explores the long-term benefits and cost-utility of metabolic surgery in both public and private hospitals. Through these projects, we are driving innovations in surgical care that have the potential to transform healthcare for millions in South Africa and beyond.
